A realistic picture of what a newborn session look A realistic picture of what a newborn session looks like from the parent side:

You get there and the baby has been awake since 4am and refuses to be put down.

Someone's coffee is cold before they've taken a single sip. Possibly yours. Probably yours.

The outfit you packed got spit up on in the car.

The baby is hungry. Again. You just fed them. Yes, again.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, somehow, we get the shot.

This is actually normal. This is almost always how it goes. The chaos is part of it, and it doesn't ruin anything.

You do not need to show up with a calm baby and a clear head. You just need to show up.
Okay, your turn – what's something I should have i Okay, your turn - what's something I should have included?
Something I've been sitting with lately: I want t Something I've been sitting with lately:

I want to build something that feels worth returning to.

Not just technically good work, which I care about deeply, but a whole experience that families actually feel at ease inside of. Where parents leave thinking 'that was so much better than I expected.'

That's the thing I keep coming back to as I make changes this year. Not bigger. Not fancier. Just better, in the ways that actually matter to the people in front of my camera.

I'm still figuring out the shape of it. But I wanted to say it out loud, because I think the families I want to work with will get it.
If you've been quietly wondering whether your baby If you've been quietly wondering whether your baby will 'do well' at a session, this one's for you.

I've been doing this for over 15 years, and I also spent years as a NICU nurse before I ever picked up a camera. I've learned that the parents who worry the most are usually the ones most present in the room. That presence shows up in the images.

There's no version of your baby that isn't worth photographing.

Which of these slides felt most like something you needed to hear? Drop a number in the comments (2, 3, or 4) for the slide that landed, or feel free to send me a message if something came up for you while reading this.
There is a version of motherhood that looks polish There is a version of motherhood that looks polished and put-together.

And then there's the real one.

The one where you haven't slept more than two hours in a row. Where you're not sure if you're doing it right. Where you love this baby more than you knew was possible and also desperately miss being able to eat a meal while it's warm.

That version is the one I'm thinking about.

If you're in it right now, I see you. This season is heavy and beautiful and exhausting in ways nobody fully prepares you for.

You don't have to have it together to deserve to be remembered in it.
They don’t stay this little… but somehow it happen They don’t stay this little… but somehow it happens faster than you expect.

Watching families come back for milestone sessions like this is one of my favorite parts of what I do. From those brand-new newborn snuggles to a curious, personality-filled 9-month-old—it’s always the same baby, but everything has changed.

If you’ve been thinking about documenting this stage, this is your sign.

Send me a message or comment “INFO” and I’ll send details your way or head on over to my website www.angelamcnaulphotography.com and send me a contact form
Every newborn session starts a little unpredictabl Every newborn session starts a little unpredictable.

Tiny humans run the show — not me 😅

But this moment right here?
This is why we take our time.
This is why I don’t rush your session.

The calm always comes.

And when it does… it’s magic.
Parents always tell me before their session: “I’m Parents always tell me before their session:
“I’m so nervous my baby won’t cooperate.”

But newborn sessions are slow, calm, and completely baby-led.

There’s time for feeding, snuggles, diaper changes, and breaks.

The magic isn’t perfection — it’s creating timeless images during this tiny season that goes by way too fast.

Your baby does not need to be “perfect” for beautiful portraits.
That’s my job 🤍

Save this if you’re expecting.
