A lot of parents come into a newborn session with A lot of parents come into a newborn session with a list of poses they want.

I understand that. You've been looking at images for months. You know what you love.

But here's what I've learned over 15 years of doing this: the pose doesn't lead the session. The baby does.

Some babies love being curled up tight. Some refuse it entirely and just want to stretch out. Some are alert and wide-eyed the whole time. Some sleep so deeply you could practically set them on a shelf.

Each of those babies can have a beautiful session. But only if the photographer is willing to let go of the list and follow the baby instead.

Skipping a pose isn't a failure. It's experience. It means someone is paying more attention to your baby than to the shot they had planned.
If you're in the process of choosing a newborn pho If you're in the process of choosing a newborn photographer, here are a few things actually worth asking about:

Does the studio have a warm environment prepared specifically for newborn sessions?

How does the photographer handle composite or supported poses - and can they explain what spotting means?

What happens if a baby is uncomfortable or resistant to a pose?

These aren't gotcha questions. Any photographer who has been doing this well for a long time will answer them without hesitation.

What you're listening for is confidence without defensiveness, and specifics instead of vague reassurances.

You should feel like you understand exactly what happens in that room before you ever walk into it.
Consider yourself warned. The longer you hang arou Consider yourself warned. The longer you hang around here the harder it gets to convince yourself you can wait, lose the baby weight, leave the house. Etc before these moments are worth documenting. Your newborn is only this small right now. And you, exactly as you are in this season, are exactly who belongs in these photos.
That’s the belief I’m apparently out here planting. No apologies.

I'll be honest with you. I've been quieter than u I'll be honest with you.

I've been quieter than usual lately, and not because nothing was happening. A lot was happening. I've been rethinking the studio, what I offer, and how I want to show up for the families I work with.

It's been one of those seasons that looks still from the outside but feels pretty full from the inside.

I'm not going to over-explain it. What I will say is that the changes I'm making are intentional, and they're all pointed in the same direction: doing this work in a way that actually serves people well.

Still here. Still doing work I love. Just coming back to this space a little more purposefully than before.

More soon.

A realistic picture of what a newborn session look A realistic picture of what a newborn session looks like from the parent side:

You get there and the baby has been awake since 4am and refuses to be put down.

Someone's coffee is cold before they've taken a single sip. Possibly yours. Probably yours.

The outfit you packed got spit up on in the car.

The baby is hungry. Again. You just fed them. Yes, again.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, somehow, we get the shot.

This is actually normal. This is almost always how it goes. The chaos is part of it, and it doesn't ruin anything.

You do not need to show up with a calm baby and a clear head. You just need to show up.
Okay, your turn – what's something I should have i Okay, your turn - what's something I should have included?
Something I've been sitting with lately: I want t Something I've been sitting with lately:

I want to build something that feels worth returning to.

Not just technically good work, which I care about deeply, but a whole experience that families actually feel at ease inside of. Where parents leave thinking 'that was so much better than I expected.'

That's the thing I keep coming back to as I make changes this year. Not bigger. Not fancier. Just better, in the ways that actually matter to the people in front of my camera.

I'm still figuring out the shape of it. But I wanted to say it out loud, because I think the families I want to work with will get it.
