With so many newborn photographers available how do you know which one to choose?

You know how it goes; you are approaching your third trimester, and you suddenly see all those amazing photos of posed newborns wearing sweet little bunny hats and wrapped up in gorgeous textured blankets and you realize you want newborn photos of your own little one. You ask all your friends who they used, then you post on social media in moms groups searching for a newborn photographer in your area and you are flooded with so many recommendations you now have information paralysis. How do you choose?

1. Define Your Style Preference

Decide whether you prefer posed newborn photography (with props, wraps, etc.) or lifestyle photography (candid, natural shots). Review portfolios carefully to see if a photographer’s style aligns with your vision. Don’t just rely on online highlights—ask for a full session to get a true sense of their work. This will help you ensure their editing and shooting style matches what you’re looking for. I personally offer studio/posed sessions and would not be a good fit for clients looking for unposed sessions. 2. Set a Budget

Determine your budget for newborn photography, keeping in mind that more experienced photographers often charge more. Check if the photographer’s pricing fits within your range, and don’t hesitate to ask about gift cards or payment plans if needed. I offer all my clients a payment plan or gift cards to help ease the upfront cost. 3. Check Experience and Safety

Newborns are delicate, so it’s crucial to choose a photographer experienced in handling them. Ask about their experience with babies. Many posed shots are composites, ensuring the baby’s safety at all times—make sure your photographer is skilled in these techniques. I love letting people know I was a NICU nurse because my history with critical newborns is comforting.

4. Read Reviews and Testimonials

Research reviews on Google, Facebook, or the photographer’s website. Pay attention to feedback on professionalism, punctuality, and the overall experience. While no one has a perfect record, consistent complaints about cancellations or delays are red flags.

5. Consider Location and Availability

Choose a local photographer to make sessions more convenient. Confirm their availability around your due date, as newborn sessions typically happen within the first two weeks after birth. My studio is in Crozet/Charlottesville and my clients travel comfortably from within an 90-minute radius including Richmond.

6. Ask About Packages and Inclusions

Understand what’s included in each package—number of photos, prints, digital files, etc. Some photographers offer extras like albums, birth announcements, or milestone sessions, so ask about these options if they’re important to you.

7. Meet Before the Session

Whenever possible, meet your photographer before the session. This allows you to get comfortable with them, see their studio, and ensure you’re confident in their ability to handle your newborn. Schedule an appointment for this, as they may be in the middle of a session otherwise.

8. Communicate Your Vision

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, have a conversation with the photographers on your list. Share your ideas and see how they respond. A good photographer will listen and offer suggestions to enhance your vision.

9. Trust Your Instincts

After gathering all the information, trust your instincts. If you feel comfortable with a photographer and love their work, they’re likely the right choice for you.
