I don’t do a lot of family photography sessions throughout the year but every fall, my schedule gets slammed with previous clients wanting fall (or holiday) family photos. Possibly to capture another growing year of their family, some love to do Christmas cards or holiday gifts. Whatever the reason is, fall is full.

The most requested inquiry I get is when is the best time to capture fall colors. Clients are looking for those vibrant oranges and browns. I think I answer this question at least once a day during the fall season. But here is the complete reality. I just don’t know! Some years, lucky clients (like this family) get the colors in full show. Other clients we might miss it by one week because the leaves dropped so fast. And the temperature really plays a key role. To hot? To cold? You blink and the leaves are gone. I honestly think it’s the luck of the draw with many clients and some are going to get a full show and others not.

Some ways I encourage clients to have the fall colors in their photos when the leaves are almost gone or gone completely… dress as if you are the fall colors! The colors YOU wear for your photos reflect the color tone and palate of your session. You want your photos to scream fall? Wear earthtones and oranges and rich colors similar to the trees. You will be surprised how embracing the colors in your own wardrobe creates the illusion of a fall session.
